Calibration mainly refers to a system of verification to authenticate that a particular instrument is exactly as per the accuracy, for which it has been defined. It compares the measurements performed by an instrument to those made by a more accurate instrument to identify any error met in the instrument tested. It is a very important process, as it helps in determining the relevant accuracy of the instrument and thereby, makes sure that it can be trusted for its observed/displayed measured value.

Calibration! What is it?

A set of operations, performed in accordance with a definite procedure, that compares the measurements performed by an instrument to those made by a more accurate instrument or a standard for the purpose of detecting and reporting, or by adjustment, errors met in the instrument tested.

Purpose of Calibration

To ensure readings from an instrument are consistent with other instruments and to determine the accuracy of the instrument i.e. that it can be trusted for its observed /displayed measured value.

What are NABL / Nationally Accredited Laboratory?

Globally, calibration expertise is independently evaluated and affirmed when a Calibration agency undergoes third party accreditation to the INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS, ISO/IEC 17025.

In each country it has its APEX Laboratories who hold Ref Standards which are derived from International Standards which are kept in Geneva . Also it has a Body/Board which evaluates all laboratories in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005. This body/Board is empowered by respective Governments to carry out evaluations and to issue Certificates of Evaluations. All such Bodies/Boards are at par by authority. In India we have a “National Accreditation Board for Test & Calibration Laboratories”. This board is empowered by act of Parliament of Government of India to evaluate and offer Accreditation to Test and calibration Laboratories in India.
